San Juan. Surfing TownSan Juan town in La Union is a popular surf destination for surfing enthusiasts. San Juan boasts beaches with surfing waves for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers.
San Juan is a town in La Union province located in the nothern Philippines. It is approximately 4 hours away by bus ride from Manila.
But how did San Juan become a surfing destination.
Brian Landrigan pioneered surfing in San Juan
During the 80’s Australian Brian Landrigan were frequent visitors to the Wallace Air Station in San Fernando La Union. Wallace is an airport near the shore which inspired Brian and his friends to venture out to the bay to see if there are waves to ride.
And big surfing waves they found, the most promixing ones for surfing were at Barangay Urbistondo in San Juan town. Thus started their regular surfing activities on their frequent visits to the Philippines.
The Filipino locals were so amazed with the Australian surfers’ surfing abilities, riding the waves with their longboards seemed to be a lot of fun. It didn’t take long for the Philippine locals to join in the fun of surfing with their visitors.
Brian’s group typically left their surf boards with the locals knowing that the Filipino surfers were truly falling in love with the sport. It didn’t take long for some Filipinos to stand out in the sport of surfing, too.
Brian Landrigan’s hobby positioned him to be a leader and a pioneer in the Philippine surfing scene. He established the San Juan Surf Resort to answer the growing interest and requirements of the Philippine surfing aficionados.
Cool Luke. The son also rises.
Brian is also the father of Luke Landrigan , on his own right a very talented surfer, and as a half-Filipino represents the Philippines at international surfing competitions. Together, they are at the forefront of the surfing community in San Juan; leading in education and training of surfers with their Billabong Surf School , preservation of the beaches, and hosting guests at their idyllic and affordable resort, the San Juan Surf Resort.

The Provincial Government of La Union headed by Gov. Ortega commended and awarded financial incentives to special athletes and their respective teachers who emerged victorious during the Palarong Pambansa 2009 held in April 16-May 3 in Tacloban, Leyte in a simple ceremony conducted at the canopy of the Provincial Capitol Building on October 28, 2009. During the hand-over rites, Mr. Mario Eduardo C. Ortega, Supervising Administrative Officer, Office of the Governor and Mrs. Delia Alano-Ortega, Special Olympics Philippines-Northern Luzon (SOP-NL) Head, represented Gov. Manuel C. Ortega.
Special Education (SPED) San Fernando City and Aringay special athletes who qualified in the Ilocos Regional Athletic Association (IRAA) Meet this year made an impressive performance during the annual national sports spectacle with the support of their teacher-trainors. The differently-abled competitors bagged four silver and three bronze medals in seven sports namely 100 meter run, running long jump, shot put, goal ball, 4 x 100 meter relay, bocce and bocce doubles.
Just last May 22 of the same year, our proud sports enthusiasts also bagged medals during the Special Olympics Philippines National Games held at the Narciso Ramos Complex in Lingayen, Pangasinan.
Giving recognition and incentives to athletes affirms, according to SAO Ortega, the commitment of this administration to improve further sports development programs of the province.
