True to its form, the Provincial Government of La Union’s Governor Basketball Team bagged this year’s Basketball Coaches Association of La Union Inter-Office Invitational Basketball Tournament championship plum as it swept two the best of three finals last March 16 and 24 at the City of San Fernando Plaza against the defending champion Coca-Cola Tigers.
Coached by former Philippine Basketball League stand-out Ian Pulido, the Capitol Dribblers led by their Team Captain, Board Member Manuel Victor “Mannix” R. Ortega, Jr., showed no mercy as they controlled the whole game. Every time the Tigers attempted to make a comeback, BM Ortega unloads his three point bombs, six of which were back to back straight three pointers during the third quarter. The boards were also dominated by Gov. Manuel “Manoling” Ortega’s boys courtesy of 6’5” center Renato Cariño and ball handler Mark “The Real McCoy” Mondina. Top scorers were BM Ortega and Augusto Manuel Sison who scored 26 and 19 points, respectively.
Completing the demolition job were Billy Salazar, Gaspar “Wings” Laureta and Carlo Mondina from the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP); Marvin Hufana from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist; Eugene Lagarteja and Ian Barbadillo from the Provincial Security Group; and Marlon Madayag from the Office of the Provincial Governor (OPG). Final score was settled at 87-78.
